Background of the Study
Snakebite envenomation is a significant but often neglected public health issue in Nigeria, particularly in rural and agrarian communities where interactions with venomous snakes are common (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). Taraba State, known for its extensive farmlands and forested regions, records high incidences of snakebites, often resulting in severe morbidity and mortality due to limited access to antivenom and specialized medical care (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control [NCDC], 2024).
Snakebites can lead to systemic complications such as coagulopathy, organ failure, paralysis, and tissue necrosis, which may result in disability or death if not properly managed (Aliyu & Bello, 2024). The effectiveness of treatment largely depends on the availability of antivenom, the timeliness of medical intervention, and the healthcare-seeking behavior of affected individuals (Usman et al., 2024). However, in Taraba State, many victims rely on traditional treatments due to poor healthcare access and financial constraints, which can lead to worse health outcomes (Ogunleye et al., 2024).
This study aims to assess snakebite incidence and treatment outcomes in Taraba State, identifying gaps in healthcare response and recommending strategies to improve snakebite management.
Statement of the Problem
Despite being a major health threat, snakebites remain underreported and inadequately managed in Nigeria, particularly in states like Taraba, where rural populations are most affected (NCDC, 2024). Many victims of snakebites either fail to receive appropriate medical treatment due to distance from healthcare facilities or seek alternative remedies, leading to severe complications (Mohammed & Ibrahim, 2024).
Limited availability of antivenom, inadequate training of healthcare workers in snakebite management, and high treatment costs further worsen the situation (Okonkwo & Yusuf, 2024). Additionally, there is little empirical data on snakebite incidence and treatment effectiveness in Taraba State. This study seeks to bridge this gap by evaluating the frequency of snakebites, assessing treatment outcomes, and proposing measures to improve snakebite management.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the incidence and prevalence of snakebites in Taraba State.
2. To evaluate treatment outcomes for snakebite victims in healthcare facilities.
3. To propose strategies for improving snakebite management and prevention.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of snakebite cases in Taraba State?
2. How effective are current treatment strategies for snakebite victims?
3. What measures can be implemented to improve snakebite treatment outcomes?
Research Hypotheses
1. Snakebite incidence is significantly high among rural populations in Taraba State.
2. Limited access to healthcare negatively affects treatment outcomes for snakebite victims.
3. Improved healthcare facilities and access to antivenom will enhance treatment success rates.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on assessing snakebite cases and treatment effectiveness in selected health facilities within Taraba State. Limitations may include incomplete hospital records and reluctance of traditional healers to disclose treatment practices.
Definitions of Terms
• Snakebite Envenomation – The injection of venom into the body through the bite of a venomous snake.
• Antivenom – A medical treatment that neutralizes venom from snakebites.
• Coagulopathy – A condition in which the blood’s ability to clot is impaired, often caused by snake venom.
• Traditional Treatment – The use of non-medical remedies, such as herbal therapies, for snakebite management.
